MidTerms are going to be AWESOME!!!!! Good luck everyone, including everyone in the recorded classes, WE LOVE YOU!!! God go with you!!!!! I know we can do it!!!!!
Okay, as I was getting through Chapter 9 of HoH I had some cool thoughts, (that aren't worded very well, but here they are anyways):
-Romans began knowing and holding Family as Central Unit in Society. Fathers were given all power, rigorously, however they did not carry their powers out as such but did it with Love. So important. Powers that great cannot be controlled and should not be given unless they are exercised in Love, and generally in a good family, Love is present; so it worked! -The Romans had many Gods and the awesome thing about that was they were constantly reminded of them. They had a God for everything good, so they not only recognized good but maintained humility and found peace and joy in this life through their reverence and ability to appreciate it, way cool. I thought it was super good that they always maintained a fire on the hearth, representing Venus (God of Love) and that they never let it die and always fed it food from every meal. It just represents that they realized and knew the importance of Love and maintaining it in their everyday life and in their families. They knew what was up and thats why they became so great. (But as we observe, when they loose that family unity and reverence to their gods, Rome dies). -I also thought it was cool to connect that the Romans drew some of their gods from Greece, or at least there were parallel gods, and because they represented good things, they found happiness by their belief in them. Collectively humans have found happiness by doing good and believing in higher powers than themselves; and religions teach those things because we have realized that its just the way to be happy. However, have we simply found the way to be happy, or is their a deeper purpose and reason in that there is A way to be happy? Could it be that all the various Gods humans have believed in throughout history existed in result of ignorance; in that we fundamentally sense and know that there truly is something more, but haven’t truly realized what or exactly who? There is A way - histories patterns attest to this - it is on our shoulders to find that way; however more importantly we must seek to not just sense God, but to liberate ourselves from ignorance and come to Know Who He Really Is! Let not our sense be in vain. Seek and Ye Shall Find, Knock and it Shall be Opened unto You! And always remember if one does Know God, they can always get to know Him better.
Hey Guys, below is my essay for World Literature that I didn't get the chance to read in class when I was supposed to, because I had other things going on. If you get the chance, please give it a grade and send it to the secretary or me. I understand that everyone is really busy because of midterms, but it would really help me out. I would also love some constructive criticism. :) Thanks peeps!
I have come to realize that in human existence, we go through what I like to call a “Roman Cycle.” A cycle in which we start out strong, reach our peak of glory, and then because of pride and ignorance, we eventually fall into what may be called a state of misery and woe--because of the inner battles we have allowed to overtake our hearts, which are in my opinion the centers of human passion, logic, and truth. Thus said, in this human existence, how can we overcome this cycle? How can we stop ourselves from falling, just as the Roman Empire did? How can we keep ourselves on top of the cycle? To state it simply, we peacefully rebel. We peacefully rebel against egotism, immorality in any way shape or form, and against wars of the heart. We peacefully rebel against anything that would incite us to defy the true compassion of the human heart. We seek to always “peacefully rebel” against the things that would provoke us to remain in the cycle that efficiently ended the Roman Empire. The “Roman Cycle.” Peaceful rebellion-what does that mean? In my opinion,a peaceful rebellion is a balance of passion, logic, and truth, which leads to a non-violent, un-provocative, almost silent battle against anything that would motivate us to go against what we as human beings should know to be true. You may be wondering how we can peacefully rebel while maintaining passion. Well, it’s simple. We must continually remind ourselves, inspire ourselves, and motivate ourselves towards our goal. Some think that in order to have passion in one’s life you must constantly have something that you are actively and openly fighting against, like a war. I do not believe this to be true. I believe that as human beings, we are called to become as the Savior was—peaceful, and yet a silently effective warrior against all things unholy. The Savior effectively learned to overcome the “Roman Cycle,” He efficiently learned to let go of the wars carried inside his heart, He lived up to, and honored His destiny. He showed us the way. He is the ultimate example of a person who learned to peacefully rebel against worldly egotism, immorality, and wars of the heart. A peaceful rebellion could be seen as the way to perfection and salvation in a way. We as human beings who have not yet overcome the “natural man,” tend to look for things to rebel against. The word “rebellion” somehow infuses passion and power into our souls—thereby furnishing us with the motivation we need to endure to the end of this mortal habitation. The Savior counseled us to find peace in all things, therefore it is my opinion that a peaceful rebellion, at least in this mortal life while we are still somewhat subject the “natural man,” is a very useful method that can assist us in the eventual attainment of salvation and glory, where there will doubtlessly be no need for peaceful rebellions any longer. To maintain a moral life, to avoid pride and egotism, to allow our hearts to remain at peace, to permit ourselves the balance and tranquility that we need—that is the way to elude the “Roman Cycle” and become the person that lies within. The person that will achieve great and mighty things if allowed to reach for and attain the full capacity for growth and learning that the soul can achieve. In my life, it will always remain my goal to remain moral, humble, to preserve a heart that is not at war with itself, and to constantly be aware of myself—continually striving to keep myself out of the “Roman Cycle” and on the path that the Savior in His mercy has shown us. This is my rebellion.
Okay here's something cool from the first two pages of chapter 10 in HoH
The Roman Republic failed, partially because they were unable to cope with the new facets of their growing industry. When large farms and plantations or Latifundia began to develop, no safeguard was taken to preserve the familial relationships resulting when Father working with Son, or Employer alongside the Employed occurs; instead overseers were given rein and were better compensated when more work was accomplished. Being unwise and selfish (void of love), instead of producing best results by befriending the laborers and slaves, they commanded with force and fear. Impersonality grew, leading to pride, and class separation and degradation. Along with this, competition was given a huge spin because the slaves, and family farming proved impractical and unfruitful and therefore they had to move to the city where they conformed and gave up their freedom and independence. Plus, concentration of wealth began, and the nobles had not love and didn’t freely give of their substance to help the poor (which is their duty when blessed so greatly, but also a way to increase their happiness by so much, it just works out all around, perhaps it was designed to work that way!). They missed the wisdom Solon had had in 594 B.C. to forgive debts and (because it was not already happening) forcibly yet by agreement divide the wealth. Ideally, a community should take care of each other of their own accord, just as a family would (in a way). Sad is the state and future of people who do not possess the love necessary to help and care for each other. When such love is lacking, no amount of agreement, enforcement or even government policy can stop that civilization from dying. Its impossible! Thus if America cannot return to virtue, we are lost, for that is the only way.
Where Greatness Hides By Brooklyn Trotter 10/18/10 In the book Odyssey by homer there is a boy named Telemochos he is the young son of a great hero Odysseus, who was really an amazing man. Now this boy Telemochos never really knew his father, because his father went away to war and fought for ten years then was trying to get back for another ten years. So he grew up without a father to teach and guide him, he did have good friends, and was well taught by his mother. He was respected because of his father’s reputation. But as time went on suitors came to court his mother and took over the whole house and were basically devouring everything he had. Now Telemochos was only a boy but he did not like this so after a long time with the help of the goddess Athena he decides he wanted to do something about these men. So he calls a town counsel and gets up and lays it out flat how he feels and tells them how wrong it is, what they are doing, and that he is going to sail to Sparta and pylos to find news of his father. After this Athena helps secure them a ship and they sneak away, when they get to Pylos Athena says something important she tells him. “Telemochos, there is no need to be shy, not a bit. You know why you have come on this voyage..” That tells me there is confidence in knowledge if we have a mission if we have a purpose we can have confidence and be secure in our journey. In my opinion in every one lies the ability to achieve greatness, to do great things, something only they can accomplish, to succeed you have to reach and sometimes even jump out of your own individual comfort zones. There is a mission for everyone to fulfill something they from the beginning were meant to do, people they are supposed to influence for the better. Finding your mission, which honestly can be difficult sometimes, although very possible and fulfilling, is supper important. All of us were meant to shine so don’t hide away you need to be the real You! Because that is who you were meant to be! Telemochos was young but he knew what he had to do he had faith that his father was still alive and he knew he could not beat those men by himself so he went out and tried to find his father. Athena when trying to give courage to Telemochos tells him “Not without the blessing of heaven where you born and bread I think”. From the very beginning of this life everyone has their own personality their own unique way of doing things, then as they grow they begin to lose more and more of their Individuality. Because they copy others so they can be comfortable. If you think about the great ones in history they where diffidently not the ones who fit it, no they were the ones who spear head change, who are not afraid to stand up and say hey something needs to change and then made it happen. Like Telemachos did with the suitors he stood his ground, he stood up for what he was feeling and what he knew was right. Another example of this is Gondi he said “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. That is so true, if you what a change be the change!
Athena when giving Telemochos some advice tells him “Some things you will think of yourself, Telemachos, some things God will put into your mind.” In this life there are special tasks for each of us to do things that no one else can do for us when these things are accomplished it affects people and visa versa. Our lives can be full of meaning or they can simply be a minimal existence. Because if you think about it every minute of every day we are influencing others, you may never know the effect you may have on a complete stranger or a best friend. When we are where we are supposed to be, at the right time, then things can really start flowing the way they should. Utilize your influence realize you are your own individual and you have a purpose. You can be directed by your own counsels but also the counsel of God, he gave us common sense but he will also give us guidance. It is my opinion this thing you where meant to do is a part of your life already you may not realize it as such it may be only a small part, but it is a something we carry in us always. Wither it is a desire to serve an interest in something or an ability, which could be a talent, or anything like that, it just may be a piece of your mission, a clue. While you may not have all the pieces of your mission you may have some, and slowly because you are trying, you will see more and more. In the end of the Odyssey Telemochos finds his father and together after many trials they kill all of the suitors and then after more strife Athena brings peace to both parties. It was not easy it was not pleasant but with help from Athena they were able to end things well. When you look around you can see all the beauty of this earth and all that creeps, crawls, grows, walks, and breathes has it's own breath taking beauty. And yet we are Gods greatest creation, so don’t be afraid to shine be you, be your true inmost self and it will not lead you astray. Who are you to put yourself down, you were meant to do great things, you may not change the world but then again you might. We all need to be brave like Telemochos and stand up and do what we feel is right we need to find our missions and do your best. And in the end of our own stories we will have good ending to. Your mission will greatly affect others and it will affect you. So let your light shine! Be the really You!
wow it is so great to have midterms over with. Everyone that participated did an awesome job. I had a thought the other day about Aenid. Aenis was the father of the romans and he was great friends with the Carthaginians now fast foward a few hundred years and the romans and carthiginians are fighting. This seems very odd to me. but then again, Aenid's group was a small group and the carthiginians probably didn't think that they would become a great nation. Rome was also becoming a superpower and there wasn't room for two of them. My question is why didn't they just unite empires? it would make more sense. then again, i wasn't there for them to ask. Oh well:)
hey people! i haven't been on at all for a while (mostly because of midterms) and i am running on......(calculating) very few hours of sleep! something i learned during midterms is how beneficial triads are! they are seriously awsome, and i would not have done nearly as well in the midterms without them. i also found it interesting how i learned as i wrote my essays. things i didn't even think i knew came into my mind as i wrote. so for me, midterms were enjoyable! peace out people!
Hey guys, does any one want to do a midterm trriad thing with me? I'm doing the recordings so i was thinking that we could try to do something LIVE together. I can get a V-rooom but if any of you guys have one we coould use that instead.
Well people, i am back. some thoughts from the aeneid: i find it very interesting that the romans were descended from the trojans. i mean, who knew that before we read the book? and now we know why carthage hated rome! (maybe)
operation: awesomeness I am going to keep up this semester if it kills me (because not keeping up DID kill me and I am still behind on outlining) HoH makes SOOOO much more sense when outlined so, that's what I am going to do...
